How to Reset VirtualBox Password
VirtualBox is virtualization software like VMware, which allows everyone to run one or more virtual machines on their computer. There are chances you forgot the Windows login password for your VirtualBox virtual machine. Here I'll show you an easy way to reset Windows 10/8/7/Vista/XP password for virtual machines running inside VirtualBox. The password resetting procedure can be divided into two steps.
1Change VirtualBox Setting
- Click here to download and save the PCUnlocker self-extracting Zip file to a folder on your hard drive, then extract the ISO image file: pcunlocker.iso from it.
- Open up VirtualBox. On the main screen of VirtualBox, select your Windows virtual machine and right-click on it. Choose Settings.
Go to the Storage tab, choose the CD-ROM device in the storage tree. At the right panel, click the CD-ROM icon and select the Choose a virtual CD/DVD disk file... option to point to the pcunlocker.iso image file.
2Reset VirtualBox Password
Turn on your virtual machine. When the Oracle VM VirtualBox logo appears, press F12. It will display all available boot devices as follow.
- Choose the CD-ROM as boot device. In my case I press the c key to let the virtual machine to boot from CD-ROM. It will load the system files inside the ISO image and launch the PCUnlocker utility.
Simply select your Windows SAM registry hive, the program will display a list of Windows user accounts. Select a user account, then click on the Reset Password button to remove your forgotten password.
- Restart the virtual machine and set it to boot from hard drive now, you can then log in to your Windows account with a blank password.
In addition, you can also use PCUnlocker to reset domain user password for Windows Server 2016/2012/2008/2003/2000 domain controller running inside VirtualBox. If you need to reset forgotten password for a EFI/UEFI-enable virtual machine, please use the Enterprise edition of PCUnlocker which supports both 32-bit UEFI and 64-bit UEFI.
