It&#8217;s good practice to enable PIN expiration policy to prompt users to change PIN regularly.<\/p>\n<p>In this tutorial we&#8217;ll show you 2 simple ways to turn on or off PIN expiration in Windows 10. When your PIN is expired, you&#8217;ll receive the message &#8220;<em>Your organization requires that you change your PIN<\/em>&#8221; during login.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/windows-10-pin-expired.jpg\" alt=\"windows-10-pin-expired\" width=\"600\" height=\"423\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9336\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Method 1: Turn On \/ Off PIN Expiration in Windows 10 Using Group Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/open-local-group-policy-editor-in-windows-10\/\" target=\"_blank\">Local Group Policy Editor<\/a> by pressing the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut and then typing <strong>gpedit.msc<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/gpedit.png\" alt=\"gpedit\" width=\"399\" height=\"206\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9207\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the following location in the left pane of Local Group Policy Editor:<br \/>\n<code>Computer Configuration\\Administrative Templates\\System\\PIN Complexity<\/code><\/p>\n<p>\tNext, double-click the <strong>Expiration<\/strong> policy in the right pane.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/windows-pin-complexity.png\" alt=\"windows-pin-complexity\" width=\"591\" height=\"328\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9331\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>This will open the Expiration window. To enable PIN expiration, select the <strong>Enabled<\/strong> option and enter a number between 1 and 730 days for when to expire after. If you use default 0 the PIN will never expire.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/enable-pin-expiration-in-windows-10.png\" alt=\"enable-pin-expiration-in-windows-10\" width=\"600\" height=\"457\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9332\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\tIf you want to disable PIN expiration, just select either <strong>Disable<\/strong> or <strong>Not Configured<\/strong>, and click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Close local Group Policy Editor and restart your computer to apply your changes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Method 2: Turn On \/ Off PIN Expiration in Windows 10 Using Registry Editor<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/6-ways-to-open-registry-editor-in-windows-10\/\" target=\"_blank\">Registry Editor<\/a> by pressing the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut and then typing <strong>regedit<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/regedit.png\" alt=\"regedit\" width=\"399\" height=\"206\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9183\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the following registry key:<br \/>\n<code>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\PassportForWork\\PINComplexity<\/code><\/p>\n<p>\tThe last two keys (<strong>PassportForWork<\/strong>, <strong>PINComplexity<\/strong>) may not exist on your machine, so you will have to create them (right-click on the previous key and select <strong>New<\/strong>-&gt;<strong>Key<\/strong> in the context menu that appears).<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the <strong>PINComplexity<\/strong> key in the left pane, and then select <strong>New<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>DWORD (32-bit) Value<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/new-dword-value.png\" alt=\"new-dword-value\" width=\"609\" height=\"345\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9333\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Name the new DWORD value as <strong>Expiration<\/strong>, and then double-click on it to modify.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/pin-expiration-registry.png\" alt=\"pin-expiration-registry\" width=\"565\" height=\"288\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9334\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Select the <strong>Decimal<\/strong> option, you can enter a number between 1 to 730 days before requiring users to change PIN.
