Different versions of Outlook use different default locations to store pst files. In this tutorial we&#8217;ll show you how to change default location for Outlook .PST &amp; .OST data file using a registry trick. It works with all versions of Outlook, including Outlook 2016 \/ 2013 \/ 2010 \/ 2007 \/ 2003.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Change Default Location for Outlook PST\/OST File?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Win + R keys in a meanwhile to open the Run box. Type <strong>regedit<\/strong> and click <strong>OK<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/regedit2.png\" alt=\"regedit\" width=\"399\" height=\"206\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6503\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>When the Registry Editor launches, navigate to one of the following keys, depend on your Outlook version:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outlook 2016:<\/strong><br \/>\nHKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Office\\16.0\\Outlook<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outlook 2013:<\/strong><br \/>\nHKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Office\\15.0\\Outlook<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outlook 2010:<\/strong><br \/>\nHKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Office\\14.0\\Outlook<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outlook 2007:<\/strong><br \/>\nHKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Office\\12.0\\Outlook<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>At the right-side pane, right-click on any blank area and select <strong>New<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>Expandable String Value<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/new-expandable-string.png\" alt=\"new-expandable-string\" width=\"538\" height=\"367\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7413\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Name the newly created value as <strong>ForcePSTPath<\/strong>, then double-click on it. On the <strong>Edit String<\/strong> dialog, enter the new default location where you wish to store the PST file for Outlook new profile, and click <strong>OK<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/ForcePSTPath.png\" alt=\"ForcePSTPath\" width=\"380\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7414\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: To change the default location folder of .ost files generated by exchange accounts, you can create an expandable string value and name it as <strong>ForceOSTPath<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/ForceOSTPath.png\" alt=\"ForceOSTPath\" width=\"538\" height=\"332\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7431\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Close the Registry Editor and restart Microsoft Outlook application. From now on, when you set up a new email account, Outlook will automatically create a new PST file in the new default location.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This method won&#8217;t affect the location of existing .pst files. If you want to change the location of existing pst file, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Exit the Outlook application. Locate your .pst file in Windows Explorer and move it to a new location.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/outlook-pst-location.png\" alt=\"outlook-pst-location\" width=\"563\" height=\"240\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7416\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Restart Outlook. An error dialog box appears that notifies you that an Outlook Data File (.pst) could not be found. Click <strong>OK<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/pst-file-cannot-be-found.png\" alt=\"pst-file-cannot-be-found\" width=\"439\" height=\"248\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7417\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>It will open the <strong>Create\/Open Outlook Data File<\/strong> dialog box. Browse to the new location, select the Outlook Data File (.pst) that you moved, and then click <strong>Open<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/open-outlook-data-file.png\" alt=\"open-outlook-data-file\" width=\"557\" height=\"417\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7418\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>When you see a warning message, just ignore it by clicking <strong>OK<\/strong>.
