To prevent, restrict or block anyone from accessing Registry Editor in Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, you can disable Registry Editor using group policy, registry trick or third-party software.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Method 1: Disable Registry Editor Using Group Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Windows key + R to bring up the Run box. Type <strong>gpedit.msc<\/strong> and press Enter.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/gpedit.png\" alt=\"gpedit\" width=\"413\" height=\"212\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6987\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>When Group Policy Editor opens, navigate to <strong>User Configuration<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Administrative Templates<\/strong> &gt; <strong>System<\/strong>. Double-click on <strong>Prevent access to registry editing tools<\/strong> on the right panel.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/prevent-access-to-regedit.png\" alt=\"prevent-access-to-regedit\" width=\"600\" height=\"387\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6988\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Select the radio button next to <strong>Enabled<\/strong>, click <strong>Apply<\/strong> and then <strong>OK<\/strong>, then close out of Group Policy Editor and reboot your computer.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/prevent-access-registry-edit.png\" alt=\"prevent-access-registry-edit\" width=\"600\" height=\"458\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6989\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>When a user tries to access Registry Editor, they will get an error message saying &#8220;<em>Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator<\/em>&#8220;.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/registry-editing-disabled.png\" alt=\"registry-editing-disabled\" width=\"377\" height=\"131\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6990\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This method will prevent all users from accessing Registry Editor, including yourself. To regain access to Registry Editor, you have to open Group Policy Editor again, and change the policy to <strong>Disabled<\/strong> or <strong>Not Configured<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Method 2: Disable Registry Editor Using Registry Trick<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Windows key + R to bring up the Run box. Type <strong>regedit<\/strong> and press Enter.\n<\/li>\n<li>When Registry Editor opens, navigate to:<br \/>\n<code>HKEY_CURRENT_USER &gt; SOFTWARE &gt; Microsoft &gt; Windows &gt; CurrentVersion &gt; Policies &gt; System<\/code><\/p>\n<p>\tIf the <strong>System<\/strong> key doesn&#8217;t exist, you need to create it.<\/li>\n<li>In the right pane, right-click on any empty space and select <strong>New<\/strong> &gt; <strong>DWORD (32-bit) Value<\/strong>. Name it <strong>DisableRegistryTools<\/strong> and set its value to 1.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/disable-registry-tools.png\" alt=\"disable-registry-tools\" width=\"556\" height=\"301\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6991\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>When you try to access Registry Editor, you&#8217;ll also get the same error message &#8220;<em>Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator<\/em>&#8220;.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This method will prevent your current user from accessing Registry Editor. To regain access, you have to log on as another administrator account and delete the registry value <em>DisableRegistryTools<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Method 3: Disable Registry Editor Using Third Party Software<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.top-password.com\/protect-my-folders.html\">Protect My Folders<\/a> you can lock &amp; protect Registry Editor with a password. Anyone can&#8217;t access Registry Editor without knowing your password.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a style=\"text-decoration:underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.top-password.com\/download\/protect_my_folders.exe\">Download<\/a> and install Protect My Folders program on your computer. The first time you launch this program it will prompt your to set a password. Don&#8217;t forgot it as you&#8217;ll need it next time you run it.<\/li>\n<li>When Protect My Folders starts, click on <strong>Add\/Lock<\/strong> button.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/protect-my-folders.png\" alt=\"protect-my-folders\" width=\"600\" height=\"410\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6992\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>The File\/Folder selection dialog should open, choose the <em>C:\\Windows\\regedit.exe<\/em> file and click <strong>Add<\/strong>, next click <strong>OK<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/select-regedit.png\" alt=\"select-regedit\" width=\"600\" height=\"393\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6993\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Now you&#8217;ll see the <em>regedit<\/em> application is locked. Close Protect My Folders program.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/lock-registry-editor.png\" alt=\"lock-registry-editor\" width=\"600\" height=\"410\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6994\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>When you try to access Registry Editor, you&#8217;ll receive the following error message:\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/cannot-find-regedit.png\" alt=\"cannot-find-regedit\" width=\"560\" height=\"131\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6995\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This method will block all users from accessing Registry Editor.
