You need to lock the Start Menu layout in order to restrict users from customizing or altering it. In previous post we&#8217;ve covered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/lock-the-start-menu-layout-from-being-changed-in-windows-10\/\">a registry hack to lock the Start Menu layout<\/a>. Here we&#8217;ll show you another two ways to restrict users from rearranging, pinning or unpinning tiles from Start Menu in Windows 10.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/unpin-from-start.png\" alt=\"unpin-from-start\" width=\"581\" height=\"635\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6715\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Method 1: Lock Start Menu Layout via Group Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Group Policy Editor is not available in Windows 10 Home. If you&#8217;re running the Home edition, please check out Method 2 below.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Windows key + R to open the Run box. Type <strong>gpedit.msc<\/strong> and hit Enter to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/open-local-group-policy-editor-in-windows-10\/\">access the Local Group Policy Editor<\/a>.\n<\/li>\n<li>If you want to lock the Start Menu layout for all users, navigate to:<br \/>\n<code>Computer Configuration &gt; Administrative Templates &gt; Start Menu and Taskbar<\/code><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/computer-start-layout.png\" alt=\"computer-start-layout\" width=\"594\" height=\"368\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6716\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you just want to lock the Start Menu layout for the currently logged on user, navigate to:<br \/>\n<code>User Configuration &gt; Administrative Templates &gt; Start Menu and Taskbar &gt; Start Layout<\/code><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/user-start-layout.png\" alt=\"user-start-layout\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6717\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>\nOn the right-side of Local Group Policy Editor, double-click the entry labelled <strong>Start Layout<\/strong> to open its properties, select <strong>Enabled<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Apply<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/enable-start-layout.png\" alt=\"enable-start-layout\" width=\"600\" height=\"554\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6718\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\nReboot your PC to apply the changes. From now on, you couldn&#8217;t alter the Start Menu layout, pin a program to Start Menu, or unpin a tile.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/locked-start-menu.png\" alt=\"locked-start-menu\" width=\"586\" height=\"638\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6719\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Method 2: Lock Start Menu Layout via Registry Editor<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\nPress the Windows key + R to open the Run box. Type <strong>regedit<\/strong> and hit Enter to access the Registry Editor.\n<\/li>\n<li>\nIf you want to lock the Start Menu layout for all users, navigate to:<br \/>\n<code>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Explorer<\/code><\/p>\n<p>If you just want to lock the Start Menu layout for the currently logged on user, navigate to:<br \/>\n<code>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Explorer<\/code><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> If the <strong>Explorer<\/strong> subkey doesn&#8217;t exist, create it (from the <strong>Edit<\/strong> menu, select <strong>New<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Key<\/strong> and type &#8220;<strong>Explorer<\/strong>&#8221; without the quotes).\n<\/li>\n<li>\nFrom the right pane, right-click in the empty area and select <strong>New<\/strong> &gt; <strong>DWORD (32-bit) Value<\/strong>. Give the new registry value a name: <strong>LockedStartLayout<\/strong>. Double-click the created value, set it to <strong>1<\/strong>, then click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/LockedStartLayout.png\" alt=\"LockedStartLayout\" width=\"599\" height=\"349\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6720\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>\nRestart the Explorer or reboot your PC to apply the changes.
