In this tutorial we&#8217;ll show you 4 ways to turn off automatic update in Windows 10, or set Windows to notify you before downloading or updating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Method 1: Turn Off Automatic Update from Settings Charm<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click on Start button. Select <strong>Settings<\/strong> when the Start Menu appears.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/start-menu2.png\" alt=\"start-menu\" width=\"501\" height=\"431\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6352\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Settings charm should open. It&#8217;ll stop Windows from automatically restart your computer after downloading and installing updates.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/advanced-options.png\" alt=\"advanced-options\" width=\"509\" height=\"512\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6355\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Now enable &#8220;<strong>Defer upgrades<\/strong>&#8221; option. New Windows updates will not be downloaded and installed for several days or months. But security updates will be downloaded immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Method 2: Turn Off Automatic Update By Disabling the Service<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Windows Key + R, type <strong>services.msc<\/strong> into the Run dialog, and press Enter.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/services.png\" alt=\"services\" width=\"399\" height=\"206\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6356\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>When the Services Manager opens, scroll down and search for the service &#8220;<strong>Windows Update<\/strong>&#8221; in the list.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/windows-update-service.png\" alt=\"windows-update-service\" width=\"587\" height=\"260\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6357\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click on the Windows Update service and open its Properties window. Stop the service and choose <strong>Disabled<\/strong> from the <strong>Startup Type<\/strong> drop-down menu. This will disable Windows Update entirely.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/disable-update-service.png\" alt=\"disable-update-service\" width=\"406\" height=\"468\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6358\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>To re-enable Windows Update simply repeat these four steps, but change the Startup Type to <strong>Automatic<\/strong> and restart your computer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Method 3: Turn Off Automatic Update Using Group Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Windows Key + R, type <strong>gpedit.msc<\/strong> into the Run dialog, and press Enter.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/gpedit.png\" alt=\"gpedit\" width=\"399\" height=\"206\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6359\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>When the Group Policy Editor opens, navigate to:<br \/>\n\t<code>Computer Configuration\\Administrative Templates\\Windows Components\\Windows Update<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Now in the right pane, double-click on <strong>Configure Automatic Updates<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/group-policy-editor.png\" alt=\"group-policy-editor\" width=\"600\" height=\"254\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6360\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>From here you can set the updates to <strong>Disabled<\/strong> or set the following options:\n<ul>\n<li>Notify for download and notify for install<\/li>\n<li>Auto download and notify for install<\/li>\n<li>Auto download and schedule the install<\/li>\n<li>Allow local admin to choose setting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/configure-auto-update.png\" alt=\"configure-auto-update\" width=\"600\" height=\"554\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6361\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Apply<\/strong> and then <strong>OK<\/strong>.
