In order to prevent most offline physical attacks and firmware-level malware, you can encrypt the operating system drive with BitLocker. In this tutorial we&#8217;ll walk you through the steps to turn on BitLocker drive encryption on Windows 10 OS drive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/turn-on-bitlocker-on-system-drive.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"547\" height=\"259\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13212\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> BitLocker is only available in the Pro, Enterprise and Education editions of Windows 10. Before getting started, you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/find-out-if-your-windows-pc-has-a-tpm-chip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">find out if your computer has a TPM chip installed<\/a>. When TPM is not available, you have to use group policy to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/how-to-enable-bitlocker-encryption-without-tpm-chip\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">enable additional authentication at startup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Enable BitLocker on Windows 10 Operating System Drive<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/9-ways-to-open-control-panel-in-windows-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open the Control Panel<\/a> in <strong>Large icons<\/strong> view, and then click <strong>BitLocker Drive Encryption<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/bitlocker-drive-encryption.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"312\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13203\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>Turn on BitLocker<\/strong> link to the right of your operating system drive.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/turn-on-bitlocker.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"369\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13204\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>The system will check whether your PC meets the system requirements for using BitLocker. If everything&#8217;s OK, you&#8217;ll be prompted to save the BitLocker recovery key just in case you have problems unlocking your PC.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/back-up-bitlocker-recovery-key-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"416\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13205\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>In my case, I chose to save the recovery key to a file on external USB drive. Afterwards, click <strong>Next<\/strong> to continue.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/save-bitlocker-recovery-key.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"371\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13206\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;re asked to choose how much of your drive you want to encrypt: encrypt the used disk space only, or encrypt the entire drive to ensure no one can recover previously-deleted files.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/encrypt-used-disk-space.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"417\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13207\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Next, you need to choose the encryption mode. New encryption mode is introduced since Windows 10 version 1511, so its encrypted drive can only be used on computers running Windows 10 (version 1511) or later.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/bitlocker-new-encryption-mode.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"417\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13208\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Make sure to check the &#8220;<strong>Run BitLocker system check<\/strong>&#8221; option, and click <strong>Continue<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/run-bitlocker-system-check.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"414\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13209\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Restart your computer when asked.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/computer-must-be-restarted.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"356\" height=\"171\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13210\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>After the PC boots back up, Windows will encrypt your drive in the background.
