In the event of a system failure or your EFS certificate is corrupted or lost, you&#8217;ll be unable to access EFS encrypted files any more. So it is very important to backup or export EFS certificate in Windows 10 \/ 8 \/ 7.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Method 1: Backup or Export EFS Certificate Using Certificates Manager<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press the Windows key + R together to open the Run box. Type <strong>certmgr.msc<\/strong> and click <strong>OK<\/strong> to open Certificates Manager.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/certmgr-msc.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"401\" height=\"207\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10245\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the left pane of the Certificates console, expand the <strong>Personal<\/strong> node and then click on <strong>Certificates<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/certificates-manager.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"559\" height=\"307\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10246\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the right pane, right-click the certificate that lists <em>Encrypting File System<\/em> under <strong>Intended Purposes<\/strong>, and then select <strong>All Tasks<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>Export<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/export-efs-certificate.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"309\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10249\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>When the Certificate Export Wizard opens, click <strong>Next<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/certificate-export-wizard.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"390\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10247\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Choose &#8220;<strong>Yes, export the private key<\/strong>&#8221; and click <strong>Next<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/export-certificate-private-key.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"402\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10250\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click the checkbox next to &#8220;<strong>Include all certificates in the certification path if possible<\/strong>&#8221; and click <strong>Next<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/export-certificate-file-format.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"497\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10251\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Enter a password that will be used to protect your exported EFS certificate. Confirm it and click <strong>Next<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/protect-certificate-with-password.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"484\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10252\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>Browse<\/strong> button to find a location to save your exported EFS certificate (.pfx). Type in a name such as &#8220;<em>my-EFS-certificate.pfx<\/em>&#8221; and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/save-your-exported-certificate.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"363\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10253\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Finish<\/strong>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/complete-certificate-export.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"442\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10254\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can then backup the exported EFS certificate in a safe place!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Method 2: Backup or Export EFS Certificate Using Command Prompt<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/open-command-prompt-in-windows-10\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open the Command Prompt<\/a> as administrator.<\/li>\n<li>In order to export EFS certificate stored in Certificates Manager, type the following command:\n<p><code>cipher \/x d:\\my-EFS-certificate<\/code><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.top-password.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/export-efs-certificate-with-cmd.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"157\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10255\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Once you press Enter, you&#8217;ll be prompted to confirm backing up EFS certificate.
