How to Bypass Windows Administrator Password

I have forgotten the administrator password of my Windows 7 installation and locked out. Is there a way to reset or bypass the password? I do have physical access to the PC.

Few things are more annoying than forgetting your Windows administrator password. Without your Windows password your PC is nothing more than a door stop. In this tutorial I’ll show you how to bypass Windows administrator password which will allow you to login to Windows once again. All you need to bypass Windows password with this method is another Windows PC so you can download the Reset Windows Password utility and make a password reset Live CD/USB drive.

How to Bypass Windows Administrator Password?

  1. To get started, purchase the Reset Windows Password utility and download it onto your current computer. Unzip the download file and you’ll get the ResetWindowsPwd.iso file which contains the password hacking tool.
  2. Next, you need to turn that ISO file into a CD. All you need to do is get a CD/DVD burning program such as BurnCDCC or ImgBurn, which allows you to burn an ISO image to CD or DVD easily! If your computer doesn’t come with a CD/DVD burner, you can use the ISO2Disc program to burn a Windows password reset USB from that ISO image.
  3. Take the Live CD you just created to the computer you want to hack. Insert the CD into the CD drive and turn on the computer. Normally, the BIOS screen tells you the keyboard key you need to press to change the boot order, watch for that message! On most computers the BIOS key is Del, F9 or F12 but yours might be different, so watch out for that on the boot-up menu.
  4. Once you boot from the CD, it will load the miniature operating system and open the Reset Windows Password utility. This program automatically detect all Windows installations on your computer, and shows a list of user accounts existing in your Windows SAM registry hive.
  5. Choose the administrator account you want to bypass the password on and click on “Reset Password” button. It will remove your forgotten administrator password immediately. Remove the CD from the CD drive and restart the computer, you can then log into the administrator with an empty password. Done!

This tutorial is fairly simple to follow even if you are not very techie person. With this trick you can bypass Windows administrator password on any version of Windows operating system, including Windows 8/7/Vista/XP.

This article will show you how to reset Windows administrator password (for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7) at times when you forgot it or when you want to gain access to a computer for which you do not know the password.

Forgot Windows XP Password? How to Reset it with Sticky Key

Forgot Windows XP password? There are many ways to unlock your Windows installation if you forgot Windows password and can’t log on your computer. Today I’ll show you another procedure to reset Windows XP password with Sticky key. The main advantage of this password reset method is that you don’t need third-party software,  but it requires that you have a Windows PE bootdisk, or create one if you don’t have.

Note: For average computer users, we recommend you to use this password reset utility to reset your forgotten Windows XP password – Reset Windows Password.  The software also works with Windows 8/7/Vista and Windows Server 2008/2003/2000.

Supposed you have created a Windows PE bootdisk, then follow these steps below to reset Windows XP administrator password:

  1. Boot from Windows PE and access the command prompt.
  2. Find the drive letter of the partition where Windows XP is installed. It is usually C:. To find the drive letter, type C: (or D:, respectively) and search for the Windows folder. Note that Windows PE usually resides on X:.
  3. Type the following command (replace “c:” with the correct drive letter if Windows is not located on C:):
    copy c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe c:\
    This creates a copy of sethc.exe to restore later.
  4. Type this command to replace sethc.exe with cmd.exe:
    copy /y c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe
    Reboot your computer and start the Windows installation where you forgot the administrator password.
  5. After you see the logon screen, press the SHIFT key five times.
  6. You should see a command prompt where you can enter the following command to reset the Windows password:
    net user administrator new_password
    If you want to reset other account password, replace administrator with your desired account.
  7. You can now log on with the new password.

I recommend that you replace sethc.exe with the copy you stored in the root folder of your system drive in step 3. For this, you have to boot up again with Windows PE because you can’t replace system files while the Windows installation is online. Then you have to enter this command:

copy /y c:\sethc.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe

Now you are done! The sticky key trick takes advantage of the security holes in all current available Windows system. So I can’t assure if it will also work with Windows 8 or later operating system.

How to Log on to Windows if You Forgot Administrator Password

I’m having trouble logging into my user account under Windows 7. It seems that my password is no longer valid and now I can’t get in. The only way I can login to the system is to do so under my son’s account which does not have administrative rights. Also, when I go to Control Panel -> Users (under my son’s account), my user account is not listed. Any ideas how I can resolve this? “

Depending on the access level applied to your son’s account, he may / may not be able to see any other accounts listed on the system. In his case, the access level is low enough that Windows 7 will not display any other user accounts.

The best option here is to reset your account password. You can do this using Password Recovery Bundle. To reset Windows administrator password, first you need to download Password Recovery Bundle onto any other accessible computer (not your locked PC), then follow the steps below:

Part 1: Create a Windows Password Reset Disk

before the work, prepare a blank CD/DVD or a USB drive. Then install and run Password Recovery Bundle on your computer, and you’ll get the interface as follow.

Insert a blank CD, DVD or USB drive into the computer, and click on the Windows Password button. It will prompt a ISO Burning dialog. Choose your prepared disc and click Start Burn button, you’ll get a bootable Windows Password Reset Disk.

Part 2:  Set Your Locked PC to Boot from Windows Password Reset Disk

Boot your locked computer. When it is powered on, check the boot-screen for setup key (i.e. DELETE key, F8 key, F2 key) to enter BIOS Setup Utility.Use the arrow keys to select the BOOT tab, then change the Boot Device Priority:  Set 1st Boot Device to CDROM or Removable Device. Press F10 to save your changes.

Part 3: Reset Windows Administrator Password

Insert the Windows password reset disk you’ve created into the locked computer. Restart the computer. The computer will load the Windows password reset disk. Once it launches the Reset Windows Password program,  you can see Windows SAM registry hive and all user accounts available on your computer.

Choose the administrator account and click Reset Password button. The program will reset your forgotten administrator password immediately. The last step is to take out of the Windows password reset disk and restart your computer. You’ll find that the computer doesn’t ask you for any password, and you can log on to Windows successfully. To set a new password, make sure that it’s a safe password and you’ll never forget it anymore.

How can I Access Windows 7/Vista/XP/2008/2003 if I Forgot Administrator Password

Hello, how to reset the administrator password that has been forgot? I cannot log in Windows and my administrator account is disabled. How can I change the my Windows 7 password? I will be thankful that if you give me the idea.

As it’s well known to us, the administrator is the built-in administrative account which has unrestricted access to everything on the computer. So if you have forgotten the administrator password, it’s a daunting task for you to reset the administrator password, especially when it’s the only user with administrative rights.  How can you get out of this situation without formatting and re-installing the operating system?

One method of gaining access to the system is to remove the administrator password using a password reset disk. What’s the most important is that we must create the Windows password reset disk before we forgot administrator password. However I don’t think this approach will help you, otherwise you wouldn’t be sitting here reading article, would you?

Another method is to recover administrator password using Ophcrack LiveCD. Ophcrack is an open source (GPL licensed) program that cracks Windows passwords by using LM hashes through rainbow tables. The program includes the ability to import the hashes from a variety of formats, including dumping directly from the SAM files of Windows. It is claimed that these tables can crack 99.9% of alphanumeric passwords of up to 14 characters in usually a few minutes.  If you’re not ‘techie’ or are short on time, we always recommends the third method below.

A third method is to use Password Recovery Bundle, one of the most popular Windows password recovery software, which will enable you to reset lost Windows password and logon with a blank password. Download and install the software on an accessible computer, it enables you to create a password reset bootdisk. Boot your locked Windows 7/Vista/XP/2008/2003 system from the bootdisk and it enables you to reset / unlock your lost administrator password easily and instantly. There are several options for you to regain access to Windows 7/Vista/XP/2008/2003 if you forgot administrator password.  With these methods you should be able to reset Windows administrator password and log on your computer successfully.
